"Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night"

The surface of the earth moves at an apprx. speed of 1500 ft. per second/  that is .30 miles per second or 1000 miles per hour.    however you like to look at it.

The Circumference of the earth is just under 25,000 miles and a full rotation is complete as we all hopefully know by now.... every 24 hours...

Actually, and I bet you didnt' know that a day is really only 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09053 seconds....but for easy math  lets stick with 24 hours... :)

COOL THOUGHT:    If The earth MOVES  a mile every 4 seconds:   this means the following:

IN a 15 second exposure (lets say I'm shooting the big dipper)  the earth will have moved 22,500 feet... that over 4 miles....   30 second exposure... yup 8 miles... ONE  minute exposure ...16 miles... Typically when shooting star constellations/ and or milky way images, I keep my exposures under 30 seconds... (depends on the ambient light from the current phase of the moon.)    What does 8 miles of star trails look like... well you tell me... go out and shoot the brightest stars... this time instead of grabbing the wide angle, go for the 200 mm range.   This will give you a better picture/understanding of this awe inspiring concept of time and motion..    WE are on a living and breathing rock..  Lets take care of her.    Happy "trails"
